Do I have to Learn to Read Music to be a Good Piano Player?

Learn Piano Add comments

Have you ever hear of piano lessons that are just for fun?

What do you think about when you think of piano lessons? Most likely when you think of piano lessons you think of a young boy or girl sitting at the piano learning to read the notes in their piano lesson book with a piano teacher sitting right beside them making sure they do it right.

Well who says learning to read notes is the right way to learn piano? Recreational Piano is exactly how it sounds. It’s the fun way to learn how to play the piano, like learning how to fish or ride a bike. If you hate reading notes, you don’t have to. If you don’t like playing classical music, then don’t.

When I was in college, I was taking a 3d animation class and learning how to make cartoons on the computer. One thing our professor always told us is, “If it looks right, it is right.”

I believe the same principal applies to recreational piano. If it sounds right, it is right. No matter how you learned the song, if it sounds good, then it is. Have you ever thought, “I wonder if the piano player on this CD can read music?

I think anyone who wants to play the piano should learn how they want. Now, you won’t get accepted into a professional symphony if you don’t read notes, but you can still play in a band or just play when you want and still impress people. I don’t think Stevie Wonder ever learned to read notes, do you?

Most people are under the impression that in order to be a good piano player, you need to know how to site read really well, but I know a lot of people who play the piano that sound like they know more than just basics piano.

How do I find recreational piano classes?

There may be recreational piano classes at your local piano dealer. Do a search online using keywords like, “fun piano lessons” or just “recreational piano.”

There are also piano books that you can order or even download that will teach you how to play the piano on your own without having to read notes for the piano” “beginner.

Good luck, and have fun playing the piano;)
