Learn piano software is a fairly new thing, and it can be hard to switch your mentality to something that is so different from what has been done for years. I’ve been a piano teacher for about 7 years, and before that I took traditional lessons until I was 18 years old (about 12 years total). So as you can imagine, the idea that you can learn the same stuff that I learned for a lot less money, some software costs less than $40, is hard to believe. I took a long hard look at these piano downloads, and what I found is that they offer the same education that you get from a real teacher.
The internet and technology has changed a lot of things, and some piano download options out there come with quality video and audio guides, as well as training books. Being able to see and hear what you are learning is the same as when you have a teacher, so I would say that if you have the drive and can keep yourself on track, you could do very well using these kinds of piano lessons.
Plus, you can study and practice with the help of a virtual teacher as often as you like. Almost all other “live” lessons would only take place once a week, and the teacher is mostly there to guide you through the things you struggle at and to keep you on track.
Ask any piano teacher and they will tell you that 90% of their students don’t even practice and that their weekly lessons are all they get as far as practicing goes. This is really not the best way to learn the piano, you should only commit to something like that if you truly have an interest in learning it and improving. To learn the piano with software you will definitely need the drive or the lessons will sit on your computer and not get used.
However, for someone who truly wants to learn how to play and will spend the time that is necessary with the tools that they have purchased, learn piano software is a great way to begin your musical studies. You will save a ton of money by going this route, get to find out if learning the piano is right for you, and if you discover that the software isn’t right for you most companies offer a full refund.
You definitely won’t get a refund from a traditional piano teacher, and while I don’t want all of my students to rush out and stop taking lessons from me, if it means that they continue to grow and learn on the piano, I’d be fine with it.
