Having been a private piano instructor who has been giving Orange County piano lessons for over 8 years, I have taught many people how to improvise on piano. Here are some of the basic tips I give them.

1. Listen to music! Load your brain with music by artists or players you want to sound like. If you want to play pop music listen to pop, if you want to play the blues listen to blues piano etc. For a whole month, JUST listen to artists who play the style of music you’d like to learn to how create. This will give you an arsenal of notes, articulations and rhythms that you will draw from your subconscious when you sit down at the piano to create your own musical phrases.

2. Make some changes to your favorite sheet music. Most of you reading this can probably read music. Us this to your advantage! Take out some of your favorite songs that you learned to sight read and make some modifications. You can start with a few measures, preferably 4 or 8 since musical phrases usually span this number of measures, and started altering some notes. Maybe change a note or few to alter the melody or perhaps change the rhythm a little i.e. changing a quarter note to a half note or two eighth notes etc. You can add your own personal touch to these songs with just a few small changes.

3. Play by ear. Playing by ear is one of the most intuitive methods to learn how to improvise on any instrument. Anyone who has learned how to improvise must develop their ear. Because you will be basically singing through your fingers, you need to start learning and recognizing what key makes what tone/pitch. To start you can figure out melodies from songs you know and try to match them on the piano too but this won’t help your creativity. The best way to create melodies in your head and try to recreate them on the piano. This will develop your ear and your creative mind power.

4. Make up your own simple song. If you can create your own simple song, you have the basic skills for improvising. Improvising is basically writing music on the fly. Take some time to create some simple songs, chord changes and rhythm to help hone your creative skills. You can start off by making a simple 8 measure composition.

If you keep working at this you will develop your skills steadily. Learning how to improvise can be easier if you know what to do and most importantly if you take the time to sit down and practice diligently whenever you can. Have fun!

Instrument parts are labeled accordingly (for piano, flute, guitar, voice, etc.). Your sheet is usually restricted to your instrument parts, but the sheets’ instrument parts are written to be played synchronously.
