Can you learn piano without having to take exams?

I'd like to learn the piano, but I only want to learn it for fun. Would it irk off piano teachers if I requested for him/her to not cover everything needed for exams, as I don't want to do them? Also, is it alright if I request not to study classical pieces, and instead more contemporary music?

Bah, if only there was a way to learn how to play the piano by yourself……

Actually all you need is someone to teach you basics, like reading music, and the keyes and then you can teach yourself how to play. Just get books that contain the music you’d like to play and do it. There are also some books that are just for ppl who want to learn how to play by themselves. I took lessons for two years and hated it. I only like to play the piano for myself and by myself. I liked learning by myself a lot better. Good Luck:)

I have had like 5 piano teachers and none have ever said anything about exams if you don’t like classical music just say so if you have the right teacher they will understand you can tell if you don’t like a peice it makes a difference in how you play it… maybe in the beginning you will have to play a few but just play them a few times and move on you may even find some you like… maybe… good luck!

You should be able to find a teacher who’s willing to work with you. (In fact, I never heard of taking “exams” for piano.) When you’re looking for a teacher, just be straightforward with what you want and what you DON’T want. Come down to it, you’re paying for a service, and you should find someone who’s willing to give you what you ask for!

I’ve never heard of of “piano exams.” Just where is this piano class you want to take? People in my neighborhood paid a little old lady to teach us piano. We didn’t have “exams” or tests. We were given a piece & we had to play it for her the next week & if we did it well enough we passed on to the next thing. If not we had to stick with the original piece. Are you wanting to pay for lessons at a college or something? In that case I guess the “exams” would be required as part of the curriculum. You’re better off looking for someone outside of academia who’s willing to teach you.

Keep in mind most piano teachers use a “book” in that book are the typical classical piano pieces. You can try and find someone who’s into what you’re into but it’s not going to be that easy.

Pardon me but you sound way, way too picky. You can’t teach yourself the piano but you want to dictate to the teacher how & what they teach you???!!! If I were a piano teacher I’d say thanks but no thanks.
